Maui County Fair

E.K. Fernandez 85th Maui County Fair is under way this Thursday night. Dozens of workers were on the job Monday morning at War Memorial setting up for the event. There will be a parade down Kaahumanu Avenue at 4:30 p.m., with fair gates opening to the public from 5 to 11 p.m. I can’t remember how many fairs I been to over the years with my kids now grown up. When the fair use to be behind Safeway in Kahului it had a small town feeling. The Mayor would be eating Chow Fun and it was a Hugh community event. The rides were always a major attraction. Then there are games and the better living tent to check out your friends and competitors. The farm tent is always fun to check out the animals. You can get close to the pigs and different kinds of chickens and ducks.
My wife always drags me into the better living tent with blue ribbon jams and quilts please leave me with the pigs. A major part of the fair is the local grinds. Malasada’s a soft Portuguese donut, teriyaki chicken, saimen and many other local favorites.
The fair is in the center of town, just a short drive from any where on the island. A lot of people enjoy living in Kihei Maui. It is just a shot drive to kahului Town.
