ASP Surfer Poll Awards 2007
For any of you who follow NFL, NBA, or the NBL on a seasonal basis, will truly understand my love for the WCT (World Circuit Tour of surfing). Surfing is a lifestyle in our family. At some point, everyone in my family was a surfer. We owe much of our healthy lives to the sport.
I never really followed professional sports as a kid. My father never made Sunday a regular holiday for football. Surfing has always been the talk at the dinner table. Kelly Slater is a household icon in our family. Whenever he one a world title, or accomplished one more record breaking feat, we discussed it till my Moms eyes began to roll.
Now that I’m older and have actually had a chance to surf with the best, I also work with them. Besides working as a Realtor for Maui real estate for sale I also manage a select group of surfers who make up some of the worlds best. Andy Irons, Bruce Irons, Jordy Smith, Bobby Martinez, and Maui’s own Ian Walsh are just a few of my super athletes.
The W.C.T. is a tour of the best 44 surfers in the world who tour the world surfing the best waves known to man. Most of us regular surfers could only dream of surfing these waves, none the less with one other guy out. There are 12 events surfed each season, each surfer accumulates points, at the end the highest amount wins. Kelly Slater has one 8-world titles, a record no one has come close to breaking. And by the looks of the present title race Slater is looking for a ninth.
In the middle of the season, Surfer Magazine holds the infamous “Surfer Poll Awards”. For the last 35 years, the magazine has as many readers as possible vote for their favorite surfers. Needless to say Kelly Slater has one more of those then any one else.
Because I work in the surf industry I get to attend this event and watch dreams become realities for some. Kelly went on to win it again for the 13th time! However, Andy Irons who usually comes in a close second dropped to third this year. Defeated by the well-known Aussie Mick Fanning. Andy left early that evening (had to surf early the next morning) and wasn’t there to accept his award, but we all knew he wasn’t happy with his result. After a long awards ceremony, all the surfers and dates mingled around and listened to live music. Kelly Slater once again the champion, took time to chat with fans and friends before slipping away to rest up for the competition the next morning.
So to all of you sports fans who dream of fraternizing with your hero’s; let me tell you, it’s pretty awesome. I just try not to act too nervous when around them.
